Techniques For Living A Purposeful Life

Life Is Calling

Life isn’t perfect. Far from it. We all have problems and stressors that affect us on a daily basis. Sometimes, these issues can lead to anxiety, negative thought cycles and even depression – leaving us to wonder if there is anything more to life than the constant headache. However, even amidst the chaos, there is always some form of purpose in life to be found. No matter how dire your circumstances may be, there are techniques to make your life better and more meaningful if you are willing to look for them.

It’s an age-old question: how do I find my purpose in life? It’s also easy to lose sight of your purpose and get caught up in a busy daily routine. You might spend all day at work, come home at the end of the day to attend to family matters, and then find yourself too exhausted to dedicate any time to yourself.

The simple truth is this: when we let life’s distractions rule our days, we lose track of what’s important. We become out of sync with ourselves, our heart’s desires and our purpose. Distractions keep us from listening deeply to ourselves.

Life is calling each of us to something but what happens if we don’t have the space to listen and respond? There is therapy for anxiety and depression available but there are also techniques that can be practiced in the moment – clearing away the incessant distractions that are keeping you from dedicating the time you need for your own well-being.

Time is sacred, and it deserves better than messy schedules, endless tasks, busywork and anxiety. The problem of being too busy is so widespread that it has become a cliché: our phones have replaced us, we are always plugged in and online and we’ve forgotten how to listen to ourselves and to others -and then we wonder why everyone seems so stressed and shut off from the world.

Finding Your Purpose

The first step to finding purpose and happiness in a chaotic world  is determining your own sense of purpose. What brings you joy? What do you want to experience in your life? How do you want to feel when you wake up in the morning or when you go to sleep at night?

Below are a set of questions to ask yourself when you feel the need to regain your inner balance, access your creativity and find your clarity in the midst of chaos:

  • What is it that you need?
  • What are you doing now, why is it important?
  • Have you committed to doing something and now you’re not doing it?
  • How do you want to spend the next month, or the next year of your life?
  • What do you care about the most, and are you willing to commit to it?
  • What is the most meaningful thing you can start doing, at this moment?

Making Space To Listen

No matter how you do it, take some time each day to stop whatever you’re doing and concentrate on really listening to yourself. Some of the best techniques to help find clarity and time for yourself on a hectic schedule can be found below-these are like little breaks in your day that give you a chance to be mindful and present:

  • Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, stop and take a breath, to be aware of what’s going on in your body right now. As soon as you notice that your attention has wandered, just return it to the present moment – noticing how your body feels right now and what the world sounds like right now.
  • Ask yourself one of the above questions. When you are open and listening to your inner voice, you are really working with the wisdom available to you. This is the moment of our true genius!
  • Breathe deeply and try and relax. Let the answers come to you. You already have everything you need right here and now to move you forward in your life. Now just listen for a moment of clarity.

It’s easy to get stressed out by work, school, and other daily activities. Despite our best efforts to relax this can be a struggle sometimes. Take a few minutes each day, to just sit and do nothing. Stop surfing the web (we don’t need to be online all the time!), put your phone down, and close your eyes.

Living a purposeful life is about turning each new day into the ability to unlock new and exciting opportunities in both your personal and professional life.

There are different types of therapy available for both anxiety and depression and a counsellor for mental health can help guide you in the right direction – but don’t forget that you can take the time each day to make space and listen to yourself. Even if only for a few minutes — you owe it to yourself and your mental well-being.
