What is Direct Billing for Therapy?
Direct billing means your counselling provider submits your session fees directly to your insurance company on your behalf.
Instead of paying the full cost upfront and waiting for reimbursement, your insurance covers all or part of your session right away.

Important Coverage Notes: What We Can (and Can’t) Direct Bill
Not all insurance companies recognize every practitioner designation the same way.
What We Can Direct Bill Most Easily
Registered Psychologists and Registered Social Workers are widely covered.
We can typically direct bill:
- Most major insurers
- Providers connected through Telus Health eClaims
- A wide range of extended health plans
This is the most seamless option for direct billing.
Where Direct Billing is More Limited
Provisional Psychologists can be direct billed to:
- Alberta
- Blue Cross
- GreenShield
- Sun Life
They are not able to be billed through Telus Health eClaims at this time.
What This Means for You
If your plan does not cover your provider:
- You may need to pay upfront
- We will provide a receipt
- You can submit for reimbursement
How to Check Your Insurance Coverage
Before your first session, contact your insurance provider and ask:
- Am I covered for a Registered Psychologist, Provisional Psychologist, or Registered Social Worker?
- How much is covered per session?
- What is my total annual coverage amount?
Knowing this ahead of time helps avoid unexpected costs.
How to Set Up Direct Billing in Jane App
You can set up your insurance in just a few minutes.
- Log into your Jane account
- Go to “My Account”
- Click “Insurance Policies”
- Add your insurance details by either:
- Uploading a photo of your insurance card, or

FAQ’s Common Questions About Direct Billing
In most cases, yes. We direct bill almost all major insurers, but coverage depends on your plan and provider type.
You may need to pay a co-pay or any portion not covered by your insurance.
If you have dual coverage, coordination of benefits applies. The primary plan is billed first, and the secondary plan may cover remaining costs. For dependents, insurers typically use the birthdate rule, where the earlier birth month and day determines the primary plan.
This depends on your insurance provider. Some plans allow billing under one individual, while others require sessions to be structured differently. Our team can help guide you.
You can still attend sessions. You would pay upfront, receive a receipt, and submit it to your insurance provider for reimbursement if eligible.
If a claim is not approved, you may be responsible for the remaining balance. Our team can help review the issue and resubmit if appropriate
