4 Common Concussion Management Strategies and Their Importance

Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head and can have serious short and long-term consequences. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing a concussion, a few common strategies can help manage the symptoms and prevent further damage. This article will discuss four common concussion management strategies and how to do them.

1. Taking a Rest

It’s important to take time to relax, both mentally and physically. Taking a break from physical or mental activity can help you heal faster. Spend time in a quiet place, listen to calming music, practice deep breathing, or find other ways to soothe your mind and body.

2. Start with Light Activities

Start slowly, focusing on activities that are calming and restful. Don’t do anything that could make your symptoms worse. Get plenty of sleep, keep screens out of the bedroom, and remember to stay in a dark and quiet space. Depending on your job, you can gradually return to work or school.

3. Gradually Return to Regular Routine

When recovering from a concussion, slowly return to your regular school and work routine. If any symptoms arise, take a break and adjust the schedule accordingly.

4. Return to Normal Activity

Once your symptoms have completely resolved, you can return to your normal activities, whether at school or work. State-specific concussion protocols, followed when an athlete sustains an injury from sports, involve slight changes to school scheduling and a progressive return to activity, along with taking brain function tests.

Note: If you have had a concussion, it’s important to take some time to rest and recover. Avoid activities that require mental exertion, such as texting, social media, reading, video games, television, loud music, and physical activity.

Gradually reintroduce activities into your routine, and take a break if you experience more symptoms. Follow your doctor’s advice, and don’t start physical activity again until you’re given the okay. Reach out to your doctor if you have any questions or need help.

The Importance of Concussion Management

If you suffer a head injury, taking the necessary steps to ensure a full recovery is important. Not taking the time to recognize and treat concussion symptoms can result in longer healing time and potentially cause long-term problems such as persistent headaches, post-concussion syndrome, and in extreme cases, permanent brain damage.

If multiple head injuries are experienced without proper concussion management, the chances of suffering from mental health issues, memory loss, and lasting brain damage become significantly higher. It is important to see your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor can evaluate your condition to determine if you have suffered a concussion. They may also order tests to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.

If you witness someone getting injured, watch out for signs of a concussion, such as slurred speech, confusion, forgetfulness, and loss of consciousness. Additionally, if the symptoms worsen or don’t go away or worsen, such as loss of consciousness, bleeding, seizures or convulsions, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Conclusion

Concussion management strategies are an important part of recovery for those who have suffered a concussion. Four common strategies have been used to help people recover from a concussion. Each of these strategies is important in helping people recover and should be done in a way tailored to the individual. It is important always to consult a medical professional when dealing with a concussion, as they are best equipped to provide the most effective treatment.
